Population

The Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 583,031 in 1970 to 621,570 in 2010. That was an increase of 6.6 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 43,931 in 1970 to 60,577 in 2010. That was an increase of 37.9 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 7.5 percent to 9.7 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 4.1 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor adding population in the first period, and NIM replaced it in the two most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM became the chief factor in adding population in all periods.
